This Tuesday’s blog is for all the folks who are fresh off the market and getting ready to start their new job. Congratulations, you did it! Your first day of work is always exciting, but it is also nerve-wracking. A person’s impression of you takes only 3 seconds based on a quick glance, so you want to be sure you are presenting yourself the way you want to be remembered by your new coworkers.
Here are a few tips that will help you be prepared for your first day of work and make a lasting first impression.
Dress to Impress
On day one, ALWAYS overdress rather than underdress. Gentlemen, wear a suit, black slacks, a collared shirt and tie. Ladies, wear black pants or a knee-length skirt, button-up and/or blazer. Look the part, dress professionally.
The Hand Shake is Everything
When introducing yourself give a firm handshake and say your name with a smile and confidence. Present yourself appropriately. Your body language is equally as important as the words coming out of your mouth. Stand up straight, make eye contact and greet with a firm handshake.
Be on time! It’s just that simple. It is never okay to be late on your first day unless a meteor hit your car (and what are the odds). Wake up extra early and lay your clothes out the night before so there is no running around to find your lucky belt.
Take the time to learn the systems, organize your desk, type up your training notes after hours. This shows your level of interest and trust me it does not go unrecognized.
Arrive with a notebook and take notes when you are in training. This will only benefit you!
Listen and Ask Questions
Give eye contact when someone is speaking and make sure you ask questions when necessary. Don’t ever be nervous to ask your manager, mentor or trainer questions on the processes they are teaching you. It shows you are serious about your work and want to be successful in your new role.
And last, but not least…
Say Thank You!
