With the upcoming summer season upon us, opportunities to serve the community are becoming more and more available. Who said that winter was the only season of giving? The Davis Impact Team, our hands-on community service team, has been busy these past few weeks, working as volunteers for the Merrimack Valley Habitat for Humanity organization. The building we worked in is a renovated convent in Lawrence, MA which has been transformed into six family-sized apartments, with three per floor. Hanging in the entrance to each apartment is a picture of the family that would be living in that house, which not only provided an incentive to work our hardest to provide this family with the best house we could give them, but also made the experience a more personal one.
Our team of 10 arrived early and met up with two representatives from Axial Group, who sponsor the apartment that we worked on. The other volunteers arrived at around 9:00, and then we gathered around to hear the agenda for the day. Each task was divided up, each volunteer claiming the project that suited their expertise. As no strangers to the Habitat volunteering process, our project supervisor had our team get straight to work laying flooring, painting walls and door trims and hanging exterior doors. Although none of us were completely well versed in the act of laying flooring or hanging doors, the volunteers did not hesitate to lend a helping hand and guide us through the process.
The team went back out to the house the week after to pick up where we left off in Lawrence to help the volunteers work on the house. If you’d like to know more about our work with Habitat for Humanity, feel free to reach out to our DAVIS office! We’d love your help.
